How Much Are Free Spins Actually Worth? A Formula You Can Use
Fifty spins at twenty cents is not a C$10 gift. Here is the arithmetic that turns a free-spin offer into an expected dollar figure, wagering and caps included.
Period 2 · Odds & bonus maths
A max-bet rule caps how much you can stake per spin or per round while a bonus is active. Break it, even once, and the operator may remove the bonus and any winnings made with it. The rule is usually a single line in the terms, so the way to avoid it is to read it before you accept the offer.
Bonus terms tend to bury the clause that decides whether you keep your winnings. Wagering requirements get most of the attention, but a separate rule often matters as much: the maximum bet allowed while bonus money is in play. This guide explains what that rule is, why operators use it, how it interacts with wagering and game contribution, and what regulators require operators to tell you. Players must be 19+ in most provinces, and 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
A max-bet clause sets a ceiling on the stake per spin, hand or game round while you are playing with a bonus or have unmet wagering. It usually takes one of two forms:
Unibet's UK welcome terms show both at once. Its promotion terms list as prohibited "betting more than 30% of the initial bonus amount in any one game round" and "betting more than £15 per spin on slots while using bonus funds". The same terms say that breaking the rules allows Unibet to reclaim bonus funds and winnings from bonus funds. That is the standard consequence: losing what you won is the penalty, not just the bonus.
A bonus with a wagering requirement is a bet by the casino that the house edge will consume the bonus before you clear it. A small number of very large stakes changes that bet. With high stakes you can either bust quickly or hit a big win early and then finish the wagering on low stakes with a large cushion. Volatility works for the player in that scenario, and the max-bet rule is there to remove it.
The UK Gambling Commission groups these clauses under the broader heading of play restrictions. In a 22 November 2017 statement it named "promotion specific play restrictions (eg maximum bet sizes, weighted wagering game requirements)" as terms that could lead to the "confiscation of deposits and winnings". It told operators to review them.
The max-bet rule does not stand alone. It sits beside two other mechanics: the wagering requirement and game contribution.
OLG's bonus help page gives a simple example. Under a 10x wagering requirement, a $10 slot wager reduces a $600 requirement to $590. OLG also explains that bonus funds are used once your cash balance reaches $0.00.
Contribution rates decide how much each game counts toward that total. OLG's General Promotion Terms (section 5.2) set these rates:
| Game type (OLG section 5.2) | Contribution to wagering | Effect of a $10 bet |
|---|---|---|
| Slots, instant games, casino game shows | 100% | $10 counts |
| Blackjack, table poker, war, craps, Super Andar Bahar, Teen Patti | 10% | $1 counts |
| Roulette, video poker, baccarat, Sic Bo, Stock Market Live, Lightning Dragon Tiger | 0% | Nothing counts |
| Online lottery, sports, any game not listed | 0% | Nothing counts |
The third column is a worked example: stake × contribution rate. A low contribution rate tempts players to raise stakes on table games to clear wagering faster, which is exactly where a max-bet ceiling bites. Unibet's terms above set slots at 100% and table games at 10%, with a 10x wagering requirement on slots.
Some terms ban certain games outright instead of capping the stake. OLG's terms, in section 4.1(5), say bonus funds cannot be used on Sic Bo or on multi-player roulette, craps or baccarat. BCLC's PlayNow terms for its "Bet on Sports Get a Casino Bonus" offer exclude live casino, baccarat and roulette from the eligible games. Neither of these provincial documents includes a per-spin stake cap. That is a reminder that max-bet clauses vary by operator: some Canadian terms have one and some don't.
Here is an illustrative case, using the structure of PlayNow's conditions. A $60 bonus at 10x needs $600 of play. PlayNow counts that as the $60 bonus plus $540 of play-through on winnings, and it holds the winnings in "Held Funds" until the wagering is complete. The bonus must be used within two days.
Now apply a hypothetical max-bet clause of $5 per spin to the same offer:
The cap here is a teaching figure, not a real Canadian operator limit. Always read the actual number in the offer you are accepting.
None of these are edge cases. They are the routine ways a single line in the terms becomes a forfeited balance.
In Ontario's regulated market, the AGCO's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming govern how bonuses are offered. Standard 2.05 bans advertising inducements except on the operator's own site and in direct marketing to players who have actively consented. Standard 2.06 requires operators to disclose all material conditions when an offer is first presented, with any others no more than one click away. It also says an offer can't be called "free" if the player's own money is at risk, or "risk-free" if a loss is possible. A max-bet limit that can cost you your winnings is a material condition. The AGCO has enforced 2.05: it issued $110,000 in penalties against BetMGM Canada.
The UK has gone further in spelling out how stake caps must work. In 2018 the Competition and Markets Authority secured commitments from Ladbrokes, William Hill and PT Entertainment and said firms "cannot rely on vague terms to confiscate players' money". William Hill's undertakings list "any maximum stake size" and "any cap on winnings" among the significant conditions that must be shown prominently. They also require deposit and bonus balances to be shown separately.
The Gambling Commission's guidance on deposit withdrawals says that where a maximum stake applies, the player must not be able to exceed it. The software has to block the breach rather than penalise it afterwards. Players must also be able to withdraw their deposit balance even if it has been allocated to a bonus. In March 2025 the Commission announced a 10x cap on wagering requirements from 19 January 2026, along with a ban on mixed-product promotions. None of this binds Canadian operators, but it shows what a player-friendly version of the rule looks like.

It depends on the terms, but a common clause, such as Unibet UK's, lets the operator reclaim the bonus and any winnings made with bonus funds. One breach can be enough.
No. OLG's general promotion terms and PlayNow's sports-to-casino bonus conditions restrict games rather than setting a per-spin stake cap. Other operators do set caps, so check each offer.
In the UK, Gambling Commission guidance says the player must not be able to exceed a maximum stake. Ontario's AGCO standards require material conditions to be disclosed up front but don't spell out software enforcement in the same way.
No. Contribution decides how much of each bet counts toward wagering. The max-bet rule caps the stake. Both appear in the same terms and affect each other.
With OLG, any cash withdrawal removes casino bonuses with unmet wagering. UK guidance requires that players can withdraw their deposit balance. Check your operator's terms.
